Lane Machine Tip - Alex Smith

Plugs vs. Wire Nuts

We see this happen numerous times each year. For some reason or another someone puts in a motor and uses wire nuts to connect the wires from the machine to the motor. Although this may be OK for a quick fix, it is not recommended for lane machines. With the amount of vibration and movement of components within the machine wire nuts can and usually do fall off. When this happens you run the risk of damaging the machine or worse, yourself or an employee.
When wire nuts fall off the exposed wires can short against the frame of the machine. This can cause simple fixes like a blown fuse or hard to find issues like random errors. Also, since the motors are high voltage this can cause injury though electrical shock. All of this because the tools weren’t available or someone just didn’t know better.
The MOLEX connections used in lane machines are used specifically due to the ability to resist vibration and stress.  They are extremely easy, quick, safe, and affordable. The crimping tool can be found locally and most electrical supply centers and the pins and connectors are cheap and available from your Distributor.  Once you used these a few times they will quickly become your favorite means of electrical connections. There uses are close to endless. These can also be used in Pinsetters for safe connections, as well.
